Everyone can agree that there’s no place like home. It is more than just a shelter. That’s really all you want, to be able to ring true when you say you’re at home in peace, free from all the distractions life throws at you. For the elderly, it is a place they can look back on, find comfort, and rely on for their physical and emotional needs.
At Legacy Place, we want our residents to feel comfortable, safe and relaxed. We also want to incorporate the best of aesthetics that have proved to be good for the emotional and mental well-being of our residents. As we strive to raise the bar on furnishings and our household environment, the goal to make a home for our older ones that is at once safe and attractive is not simply an act of love, but one of human dignity.
Here are some reasons why this is a priority, how you can use these principles in your home and also an introduction on how you can help our residents with this initiative.
Security is the cornerstone of any living space for seniors. Mobility, balance and vision change naturally as people age. Falls are a senior’s greatest threat to life. There’s no question that we need to design spaces to minimize risk, particularly for those more dependent on support systems. An Awake! article (2011) briefly mentions some important safety issues:
Such steps make our elderly citizens feel at ease in their own homes.
Safety is a priority, but the home should never feel uninviting. We all know how soothing it is when we come back to a home that is warm and beautiful. Older ones need a peaceful and positive environment that helps them truly be comfortable and at ease.
Beautiful interiors can:
In the end, we want to curate a living space that our older loved ones will enjoy living in. We want to give them our best, and if aesthetics is what can benefit them, we do just that.
This balance is where true caregiving shines. The space that we create must be one that is safe, but at the same time, not feel clinical or restrictive. This may even apply to very small details of how you place the lighting or the furniture. That can make a whole lot of difference. Here are some guidelines:
Here are some good, simple, heartfelt design solutions that can be used to design a beautiful living space:
You can choose chairs with a good armrest. Cushions should be firm, and the height of the seating should not be too high or too low. Seating should have rounded edges for extra safety.
Not only does this look beautiful, but contrasting colors help seniors distinguish edges and surfaces easily.
You can keep one type of lighting for the entire room, but add a brighter lamp for reading and eating. Softer lights that aren’t too harsh but still bright enough for easy mobility can be installed at night.
The home feels calmer and is easier to navigate when everything has its place.
Family photos, scriptural quotes, meaningful artwork, familiar blankets, and plants can be added – all placed safely in a place easily accessible. These are a reflection of the person’s identity and history, which is so important.
Avoid loose rugs as they may cause you to trip.
Beauty in creation refreshes the spirit. Plants, natural light, or nature-themed artwork enhance tranquillity and connection.
When you shape a home that’s both secure and beautiful, you’re not just checking off a safety list but showing real kindness. It reflects the principle: “honor those advanced in age.” (1 Timothy 5:4)
Upgrading furniture and rethinking the layout is an investment in quality of life, health and dignity. A home that connects safety with beauty empowers our elderly loved ones. It allows them to age at home with dignity, independence, and comfort.
The goal of Legacy Place has always been to provide loving care, and this includes making our dear elderly ones feel valued and safe. To this end, we try our best to make everyday living comfortable for them. A lot of thought has gone into planning the aesthetics of our buildings, and we have found that some of our furniture needs replacing. They have served us well, but it’s time that they be replaced.
With this in mind, we feel the need to raise funds for new furniture. We are using this Giving Tuesday initiative to get the best deals from retailers and maximize the use of your generous donations. The anticipated cost of this is $40,000.
